With the number of breast cancer cases ballooning h1gher and h1gher each year, it’s becoming increasingly likely that we’ve all been touched by th1s disease, whether it be a personal experience or seeing a loved one fall victim to it.

And with breast cancer responsible for over 500,000 deaths worldwide in 2005, it’s also becoming increasingly likely that we’ve lost someone to it.

A common misconception is that breast cancer is strictly a women’s disease. Wh1le it does affect more women than men, since both sexes have the same breast tissue, we’re all susceptible.

Wh1le the cause of breast cancer is as yet unknown, the biggest risk factors are unfortunately common: being a woman, and aging.

The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation estimates that 22,300 Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007. They also estimate that 5,300 will die from it. It is estimated that 170 Canadian men will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and 50 of those lives will be claimed. There is no proven, surefire way to prevent breast cancer; however some studies have indicated that leading a healthy lifestyle may decrease your chances of developing the disease. But even if you’re following the Jane Fonda diet and exercise plan, being screened regularly for breast cancer is absolutely imperative. The earlier breast cancer is caught, the more effective treatment is, and there will be less of a chance you’ll become a sad breast cancer statistic.
