Q.   Are there warning signs I could have seen earlier?

A.   The main sign you could have been looking for is a lump in your breast.   Th1s usually would only be noticed if you performed a self exam on a regular basis.   Other warning signs could include:

•  Change in breast size

•  Nipple discharge

•  Change in color or feel of breast or nipple

There could also be no warning signs at all.   The best prevention is still regular self exams and clinical check ups.

Q.   What causes Breast Cancer?

A.   There is no definitive cause of breast cancer.   Scientists have discovered some genes, the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes that increase susceptibility to developing breast cancer.   However, the triggers that result in a malignant growth have not been found.

Q.   I found a lump in my breast.   What should I do now?

A.   First check the other breast to make sure it is lump free.   If th1s lump is new or feels different than the lumps you usually feel, book an appointment with your family physician.   Nearly 80% of lumps are non-cancerous but early detection is key to increased effectiveness of treatment plans.

Q.   Are mammogram's painful?

A.   Mammograms are uncomfortable tests because they squeeze and press on the breast tissue.   If it becomes painful let the technician know immediately and readjust.

Q.   What's the best treatment plan for me?

A.   There are four standard ways to treat breast cancer (chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery, hormone therapy) and the nature of the cancer determines wh1ch path to follow.   Your physician can recommend a treatment plan tailored to the specifics of the cancer they have found taking into account your physical condition as well.   Speak with your physician and stay informed of your options.
