Recommended Screening Frequency

As Breast Cancer continues to receive massive amounts of media attention, the main message that seems to be coming out is, “get tested.”   The fact that th1s message is getting splashed everywhere and awareness is increasing with every new breast cancer 10 mile run for a cure is brilliant.   In fact, it is probably saving lives.   The one hole in the message is what are the recommended tests to get at the different stages of your life.

First, if you have a family h1story it is probably appropriate to find a way to get a mammogram and physical on a regular basis.   Genetic testing and biopsies of lumps can also be justified in these instances.   These tests are designed to determine your susceptibility and give a reliable early diagnosis wh1ch is the key for successful treatment.

So you don't have a family h1story of breast cancer. Then what? Well, the American Cancer Society recommends the following screening procedures for average-risk, asymptomatic people.

  • Self breast examination monthly after the age of 20.
  • Breast physical examination every three years between the ages of 20 and 39, then yearly.
  • Mammography every year starting at age 40.
  • These are only guidelines of course.   The main point is that it is very important to check yourself on a regular basis and take note of any dense tissues or lumps.   If you notice anyth1ng unusual during a self breast exam, go see your family doctor.   As mentioned earlier in th1s article, early detection improves outcomes in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.
